Pedigrees

Using the Better Breeder Pedigree software, build a pedigree database that will dynamically create an interactive on-page pedigree for every Dog Single page. Adding a pedigree to Dog Single pages is a snap. It improves user experience (UX) and internal linking page linking in the process.

Getting Started

Building a pedigree database from ground zero will take some time, particularly if you have been breeding for a long time and your pedigrees go back many generations. However, the initial time investment pays off for years to come – in ease of use, user experience (UX), and page performance.

When building the database, start at the back of your dogs’ genealogy and build forward. This will allow the project to progressively become more efficient as you build forward. Remember, each name only needs to be added once. The next time that name is selected in a pedigree, it will generate dynamically.

To start, determine which Dog Single page has the pedigree that goes back the furthest – perhaps a foundation bitch or pillar stud dog. Begin adding the registered names from the fourth generation of the pedigree, working top-to-bottom, and then move forward to the third generation, and so forth.

Build Database

To build the database, add each name in a similar manner to how a new Dog Single page is created on the website. Navigate to “Dogs” and click “Add New.”

Once on the Add New Dog page, enter Registered Name, and then under the Type section, click on “Pedigree Only.” This will enable the name to be added to the pedigree database, but will not create a Dog Single page.

Next, scroll down to the Pedigree section. Click on the toggle button to Enable Pedigree. For names in the final generation, leave Sire (Father) and Dam (Mother) blank. In every generation moving forward, this is where you will select the Sire and Dam to build the database and dynamically create the pedigree for each Dog Single page.

Next, under the Details section, select the Sex of the dog. Assuming that Breed was set up in the site Customizer, that will be automatically populated. All other information under Details is optional.

Finally, scroll back up to the top of the page and click “Publish” to add the Pedigree Only dog to the pedigree database.

Once the page refreshes, click “Add New” to proceed to the next dog.

Once the fourth generation has been added, move forward to the third generation and continue adding names in the same manner. The only difference is to begin adding the Sire (Father) and Dam (Mother) from the database. Begin typing the Registered Name and select it in the dropdown box.

Use this same process for all further generations, and to add the pedigree on Dog Single pages.

Quick Tips

The most efficient way to build the database is to reference a text-based pedigree (Word or PDF file) in another browser window in order to copy, and then paste registered names into the Add Registered Name field.

If you don’t have a pedigree file, use Google to find one by searching for “[registered name] + pedigree” as most breeds have online pedigree databases available.

In the event you can not locate the pedigree in digital format, the registered name can be typed into the name field; however, that certainly is not optimal or efficient.

While you can use your mouse to highlight each name, and then right-click to copy and to paste, it is even faster to use the shortcodes of “ctrl”+”c” (to copy) and “ctrl”+”v” (to paste). If the pedigree file or webpage is opened in a separate browser window (not a separate tab in the same window), you can also use the shortcode of “alt”+”tab” to toggle instantly between screens. Once you get comfortable with your sequence of steps and keystrokes, a 4-generation pedigree can be completed from scratch in just minutes.

A Pedigree Only ancestor can be converted to a Single Dog page by simply changing the Type from Pedigree Only to Page. Then, update the page with additional information such as a profile picture, awards, details, health testing, etc.

PRO TIP: There is considerable benefit to building pedigrees further back and converting Pedigree Only names into Single Dog pages, particularly when including popular and foundational dogs in your breed’s history. The Better Breeder Pedigree software functionality, combined with the other SEO elements in the Ultimate platform, creates highly optimized webpages that can dominate the top of the Google Search Results Page (SERP) for those dogs’ names. This helps build the website’s topical expertise and domain authority and improves the site’s overall performance.

Results like the one shown are common on the Ultimate Website platform when combined with the Better Breeder Pedigree software. The dog listed was one of the most popular dogs in the breed’s history, with thousands of mentions online. Yet, his Ultimate Single Dog page ranks #1 on Google.
